# Prompts

> How to add, classify, pause, delete and find new prompts, including with Prompt Discovery.

A **prompt** is a question we ask the AI assistants at every check. Prompts decide what you measure: all of
the brand's numbers come from the answers to them. For what makes a good prompt, see
[Choosing prompts](https://survelium.com/docs/guides/choosing-prompts.md).

## Add a prompt

The **Prompts** page → **Add prompt**:

- **Type my prompt** — the form below.
- **Prompt Discovery** — suggestions from several sources (see below).

The form fields:

| Field | Values | What it's for |
|---|---|---|
| **Prompt** | the question text | what we ask the assistants, exactly as written |
| **Type** | Organic · Brand-specific · Competitor comparison | whether the question mentions your brand or your competitors |
| **Tag** | Informational · Comparison · Purchase · Recommendation | what the person asking wants |
| **Intent** | Commercial · Transactional · Branded · Navigational | the stage on the path to purchase; you see it in "Intent mix" |
| **Active** | yes / no | only active prompts are checked |

Type, tag and intent don't change the question asked to the assistants. They're used for filters and for reading the numbers: a
**Brand-specific** prompt ("is X any good?") almost always names you, so it inflates visibility; an **Organic** one ("what's the
best…?") shows whether you appear on your own.

A new prompt joins the **next check**; it doesn't run right away.

## Pause and delete

**Pause** — open the prompt and uncheck **Active**. Its status becomes **Paused**: it's no longer checked, and its old
answers stay in the numbers for the periods when it ran. You can turn it back on at any time, if the plan has room.

**Delete** — open the prompt → **Delete** → confirm. The prompt stops running and leaves the list, but **its answers
stay in the numbers of the periods when it ran**: charts are not rewritten after the fact. While the chosen period
holds answers from it, it still shows in the prompt table on the Dashboard, so the rows add up to the totals.

## Plan slots

A paused or deleted prompt **keeps its slot in the plan until the next month of the subscription**. Above the table
you see "Paused or deleted prompts still holding a plan slot: N. The first one frees up on …". Turning a paused prompt
back on while it still holds its slot doesn't need a new one.

Exceptions:

- a prompt added and deleted within 24 hours, before it ever ran, frees its slot at once;
- during the trial, slots free up at once.

See [Freed slots](https://survelium.com/docs/account/billing.md#freed-slots).

## Prompt Discovery

Suggests new prompts, written neutrally (without the brand name). It has five modes:

| Mode | Starts from |
|---|---|
| **From a topic** | a theme you write |
| **Google Search Console** | the real searches that bring you impressions in Google (requires the [connection](https://survelium.com/docs/configuration/search-console.md)) |
| **Related questions** | an existing prompt; finds related questions |
| **From a website page** | a page we read |
| **What people search for** | Google's related searches and "People Also Ask" questions |

You get up to 10 suggestions at a time. Suggestions very similar to your existing prompts don't reappear, and neither do
ones you've already added or rejected. For each one: **Add this prompt**, edit it, ask for a different suggestion or
**Reject — never suggest again**. **Add selected to prompts** adds all the checked ones, as active.

"What people search for" runs at most 5 new searches per brand per day; after that it shows the latest results.

## Other prompt sources

- **Where you're missing → Generate probe prompts** adds prompts for the topics where competitors appear and you don't.
They're added **paused**, so you can review them before you activate them. See [Where you're missing](https://survelium.com/docs/metrics/answer-gaps.md).
- The **Source** field in the prompt form tells you where it came from: SEO keywords, URL, brainstorm, manual, answer gap, Google Search Console or Google related searches.

## Table columns

AI visibility, AI position, Brand mentions, Top competitor, Top sources, In latest answer — calculated for
the chosen period and model. Google demand and Gap appear only for prompts that came from Search Console (see
[Google demand and gap](https://survelium.com/docs/metrics/google-demand-gap.md)).

## Limits

- **Active** prompts across the whole workspace are limited by your plan, together with the ones still holding their
slot (see above). The limit also applies when you turn a prompt back on and to prompts added from Prompt Discovery.
- In early access, a brand has at most 15 prompts, active or paused. Deleted ones don't count here.
